A brother of a friend of mine was given a couple Apple Power Mac G4 desktop computers but they did not have the operating system software discs which she would like to have. She needs to change the passwords and so forth.

Yes it can. I have a Laptop G4 running Leopard and it runs great.

Can OS X be used in an Apple Power Mac G4 desktop computer? If not, which can be and where should I buy it?

im using 10.4.3 in my G4 so yes it can be done.

Not to sure about the latest Mac operating system though.

All depends on what processor/ram they have.

Absolutely it can be. The OS X install discs can be purchased from an Apple retail store or online at:

The newest version of OS X (10.5 Leopard) WILL run, but it’s going to be a close one. The Apple.Com specs to run Leopard say at LEAST a G4 867MHz processor or better, and at LEAST 512MB RAM, but I’d strongly recommend at least 1GB RAM to run Leopard on a G4.

You might be better off going with OS X 10.4 Tiger. It’s cheaper and designed to run on G4’s without problem (it’s designed for G3, G4, or G5 processors) and only needs a minimum of 256MB RAM (although more is better).

I get all my Mac hardware (like RAM upgrades) at OWC (http://eshop.macsales.com/) but you can get Tiger at Amazon, Apple.Com, or a local computer store.

I’ve got two G4’s – an audio and a mirrored drive door and both are on OS X 10.4 Tiger with no problems at all.

The audio didn’t have a DVD rom, so I had to send in the Tiger DVDs for CDs – the mirrored drive door has a DVD so now problem with out of the box installation.
