I received a iMAC G3 computer, when I got home, I plugged it in and tunred it on. Then when it was on, I unplugged it from the outlet. NOW, it wont turn on at all. When the power cord is connected to the pc and the outlet, I do hear a soft noise coming from the computer, when I unplug the cord, the sound goes away. WTF is wrong with this thing? Any ideas?

Pulling the plug to turn off a Mac is not recommended as you have seen the result of what might and did happen. That being said, try the troubleshooting steps found here.

If you want to see the options for upgrading that old G3, look into the lowendmac site.

If you want to replace it, the value of your machine becomes pegged to the cost of a new machine (which also depends on what you want to get) less the improved performance. Cost of the new machine would also include the cost of new software.

There’s this old iMac G3 (indigo, slot-loading) at my high school that I’ve been eyeing for quite some time. I already have a computer, I just want it basically to have one (because they just look so cute) and to put OS X Tiger on it and get acquainted with Mac OS (I’m a Mac virgin.) A few days ago I noticed it had a “RIP” sticker on its screen, so I might have a chance to get it free if the school chooses to dispose of it. However I talked to someone who had used it and he said he tried to run an application on it that was too much work for the machine, and “the screen went white, the speakers buzzed, and smoke came out.” And the machine hasn’t powered on since. Does anyone out there know what could be wrong, and if so, how to fix this? I’m a PC expert but I know nothing about Macs. Is it even possible to fix? Worth it to get that computer?

I have no more internet! It says that its connected to my home computer and it says it gets internet but when i go on the internet it says “page could not be found”. i try google, youtube, facebook, watever nd it doesn’t work with anything! it says the same thing! It is connected to the right network and everything but I can’t uninstall smart engine because it’s not showing up on the program list to delete stuff I tried to force it to uninstall but that didn’t work either…do u have any more ideas?

Step Zero: Check if you’re connected to the correct network.

First step: uninstall Smart Engine.

Second Step: If removing smart engine doesn’t fix you up, check that you’re connected to the correct wireless network again.

Iv had mac Laptops for years, and yes, i find it a superior product to most pcs. Its solid like a rock, has tones of nifty features like a built in webcam, mic, one piece trackpad. A great, high resolution screen. The battery life is quite respectable. It does get a bit hot at times, but hardly noticeable.
Not to mention the OS ROCKS!!!

No. Don’t do it.
The clamshells are ugly, slow and overheat easily.
They run power pc, which is the really old dodgy processor that mac’s used before they became popular.

As a general rule of thumb, anything Apple pre-2005, is bad.
And it won’t run good web design software.

If you’re interested, I’d suggest you have a look at some of the refurbished mac’s. These are mac’s which come at a cheaper price because they had a part of them which was defective. They are great old computers and still work fine.

Any RGB monitor (including the new flat screen models) will work with the RAGE 128 video card in the G3 blue and white tower.

Yes a used G3 with Tiger would be acceptable I had the same problem in first grade because my school also uses mac’s but you can just buy that and it will help her a lot!

They’re still usable in the usual light tasks such as internet browsing and Microsoft Office / iWork.

Not bad for the money.

Be aware that the 700MHz processor is not adequate to run Leopard however.

I assume that a driver is required to enable proper connection between the phone/camera and the computer. This would then allow me to download the photos from it to the computer. If this is the case, please tell me where I could find the appropriate driver. If this is not so, please tell me what is required and where to get whatever is needed.

I’ve just bought a used LG1700 Slider phone with a 2.1 mg pixel camera but the user’s manual didn’t come with it (and I’m in Korea anyway – so wouldn’t have understood it!). I have a Macintosh G3 PowerBook computer with USB ports. It hooks up to the Mac via a USB cable with no problem, but there is no disk image of the phone/camera on the desktop.

All apple products are great. If it’s in good condition and cheap (cause it’s so outdated) I would say go for it. I think with this laptop you should consider what you’ll use it for. As long as there aren’t any heavy duty memory taxing programs that you want to run you should be ok
