Im giving my Ibook G4 to my neighbor and need everything gone he said he’ll do all the reinstalling. I heard about holding a big magnet to the hard drive does that realy work and what kind of damage does it do. if you know of any other simple ways please tell me and please explain how to do them because i am not very good with computer
A big Magnet damaged the hard drive and you will not be able to use it again, best way is to format it ,if you want to be safe format it few times, then reinstall new OS on it,some people go further and format it in windows format too like NTFS ,BUT believe me once or twice format makes all your hard drive to be clean ,even if you format it once take at least 100 hours and special software and also lots of money to retract anything from your hard drive…
I want to wipe everything from my iBook G4 want are some simple ways to do it?

You could just delete your files using Finder. If you then use your computer for basic tasks for a few days the chances of even serious data recovery software being able to get any of your data back is very small.
Data recovery software can work if you immediately turn the computer off after deleting, and use the software, but if you
That’s my suggestion for a really simple solution.
If you’re seriously concerned about your data, continue reading and perform a format/reinstall.
Formatting and reinstalling fresh OS X is pretty straightforward, even if you’re not really good with computers.
For this you need the original disks that came with your iBook, or else you need a retail copy of OS X, or finally an illegal downloaded copy, but that’ll likely get too complicated for you if you’re not already familiar with downloading cracked software.
Assuming you have the discs for OS X (I’d guess it came with 10.2, but it should work with up to 10.4):
Insert Disc 1 and reboot your laptop.
When you hear the chime sound, hold down the "C" key, and keep holding until your see the white screen with the little rotating dots.
If you make a mistake and it loads up normally anyway, just reboot and try again.
When the CD loads follow the instructions and pick a language.
As soon as you can, click at the top of the screen on Utilities, and then Disc Utility.
Disc Utility will let your erase your HDD so no files are left.
If you see the Customise button as you’re going through the instructions you can un-check the additional languages, and the printer drivers (they’re huge and you don’t need them) to save space, and a lot of install time.
Just click through … there’s nothing you can reallydo to mess it up.
It’ll install a fresh copy of OS X just like it was new from the box.
