Late 2005 was a dual core 2, dual core 2.3, and a dual core 2.5×2 (two dual core processors for a total of 4).
Early 2005 models had one dual core 2.7.

Should.
And, again …
Should.
And, again, just look around the insides, particularly underneath the processor.
Plus, you may not even need to take anything further apart than the side access cover. I’ll send another PM that shows what to look for as this is unique to the Panasonic.

Isn’t there also a …
Isn’t there also a G5 dual core 2.5 and a Quad core? I thought the last October 2005 lineup was: dual core 2.0, Dual core 2.5, and 2.7 then Quad core G5 2.5

I know, but are the …
I know, but are the Quad G5’s, the last G5’s before the mac pros using panasonic LCS’s? I am a little concerned. How do I even take the cover off to see if its a panasonic? Good news though, the seller told me that the machine has been working since day one. I wonder if that helps.

And, if your G5 has a Panasonic LCS, you shouldn’t have any trouble. As for eBay bidding, I know exactly what you mean!
Plus, if your G5 works well enough for you, I’d probably keep it until at least a half-year after OS X 10.6 comes out. Unless you got your G5 for a song and can get more from the trade than you paid to buy and ship it to yourself, there’s no need to trade it up so soon.
You may as well use it for as long as you can and get your money’s worth.

Ok, so I have nothing to worry about? I currently use a dual 1.25 MDD G4. I was really supposed to go with a mac pro, but I keep losing bid after bid on ebay, so I decided to go with a quad core G5. Maybe in a month or two, I will trade it up for a mac pro. I can’t see myself affording 2499.99 out right at this time.

Not all PowerMac G5 …
Not all PowerMac G5 computers use water cooling.
There are a few models that use thermal dissipation consisting of the conventional heat transfer fins and heat pipes.

I’ve heard that, as …
I’ve heard that, as well.
The late model quad G5 computers with LCS used Panasonic units, which are much more reliable.

Hi there! I just …
Hi there! I just got a late 2005 Quad G5 and was wondering according to some reports, the Quad G5s seem that they have been spared the delphi problematic LCS.

Yeah well the good news is my coolent didn’t leak on my dual 2.5 but guess what, the logic board and processor went anyways! After my apple care expired! He’s right, about 800 for EACH part! And I have heard countless other cases like this online. Sorry mac, you blew it for me. I will never buy anthing from yous guys again!

As you’ve said, …
As you’ve said, they were probably pursuing silence in their machines and watercooling is one way to do it.
As for the speculation, it wouldn’t surprise me although one other stated reason for the abandonment of the G5 was that it supposedly ran out of room to grow.
I’m not presenting that as an only reason or even as a fact, mind you. But that can also explain why they never could make a G5 Powerbook.
November 6th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
I’m not sure other …
I’m not sure other then silence and the gee whiz factor as to why Apple water cooled the G5 since they still ran cooler then netburst based Intels.
Not sure what the latest core macs use but on late G5s and early mac pros they went back to normal aircooling.
Also ironic PA Semi made a G5 derivative that has lower TDP then Core around the time of the switch.
It’s speculated Apple really switched to lower R&D costs so they can concentrate more on the iphone and ipod.
November 6th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
The G5 actually has …
The G5 actually has a lower TDP then netburst Pentiums only 45 to 65 watts vs 80 to 130watts.
But apple always pursued silent computers hence the water cooling.
This quest for silence has gotten them in trouble numerous times such as with the Apple ///,early macs, and imacs.
Since it was a huge desktop they really should have just used heat pipes and a big fan which is what they did on the mac pros.

Of course, in the …
Of course, in the case of leaky G5 LCS units, the coolant can leak into the PSU and cause catastrophic failure.
But, there are G5 power supplies that fail in non-LCS G5 towers. Apple has a warranty extension on those. Unfortunately, my sister’s G5 was not covered as its serial number wasn’t within the range specified in the recall campaign, so the PSU had to be purchased from DT&T and I had to install it.
