Apple Powerbook G4 hard drive replacement

This video is the result of me having to replace a dead hard drive for a G4 and realizing there aren’t nearly as many videos showing the process.

I know it’s not the “perfect” demonstration setup, not even close – ideally I’d have a top-down view with the camera mounted on the ceiling, but at least you see EVERY step of the replacement visually, all the way to OSX installation. I’m a visual person so just reading about what needed to be done wasn’t giving me a clear idea of how much work it would take.

I hope it helps at least one person out there to have a better idea of what they are getting themselves into

Lastly I must mention http://www.ifixit.com/ because had it not been for THEIR helpful guide and website I doubt I would have been able to do this nearly as smoothly. Mad props to them for their wonderful step-by-step guides (with pictures)!

How hard is it to replace the Hard Drive on an Apple G4 laptop?

I may be in the market for a G4 laptop – either an iBook or Powerbook. I[’m not interested in screen size or processor speed or wireless access (I won;t be paying much). I am concerned that Apple didn’t design the G4 laptops to make hard drive replacement something that any user can replace.

I have heard contradictory suggestions about whether or not hard drives on any G4 Ibooks or Powerbooks can be replaced by the user, whether this can be done w/o at least a semi-complete tear down of the laptop and whether there’s a reasonable chance that the owner would kill the laptop even trying.

So

Has anybody tried this? If so, what was your experience? How well did it go? How skilled are you? responses much appreciated
I’ve replaced ram, cpu’s and hard drives on windows notebooks without any problem, so that should give you frame of reference as to what I’m used to.

Here’s the thing about your question. I’ve repaired thousands of laptops and so for me it’s no big deal taking out screws and keeping track of them and making sure that I’m not carrying around a static charge in my body that I’m going to carelessly discharge into some circuitry and zap it.

I think that it’s fairly simple but that’s “for me”.

If someone lacks the basic electro-mechanical skills and knowledge to replace something like a hard drive in a laptop then they could make any number of mistakes like trying to put the signal cable in wrong and bending pins or damaging the unit while trying to disassemble it or something like that.

So it really depends upon the individual and their background and experience and talents as to “how hard” it is to replace the Hard Drive on an Apple G4 laptop.

Of course, after you replace the Hard Drive you have to be able to install Apple operating software on it. So that’s another level of skill and knowledge necessary for this procedure. Do you know, or can you follow the instructions for, how to install Apple software on a new Hard Drive?

Why won’t my Apple Powerbook G4 battery charge past 70%?

I have an Apple Powerbook G4 15inch running a 1.67 ghz processory. Whenever I charge the battery it will not go past 70%. I just installed a new hard drive, and before it was running on the last hard drive with OS X 10.4.11 installed it would not charge past exactly 80%.

Is there a setting I can change or something? It seems like it’s going down in 10% increments but doesn’t make sense that a battery would do this. Has anyone heard of this before?

The battery can’t be more than 5 months old and has only been put to light use. It was a purchased replacement for the original battery that was so drained it was useless.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? Or is my battery really just dying 10% at a time…?

If it’s less than 6 months old, you might be able to take it to the store. Go to (Apple sign) –> About this mac –> More Info –> Power in the left tab. If you see the cycle count is less then 300 you will be able to take it in for a repair. Heck if you get lucky, you can get a new MacBook ^.^

What program can over clock a 7150M intergrated graphics card?

I was trying to find a program that can over clock a 7150M Geforce on my laptop. i wanted to change the dedicated memory from 128 MB to 256 MB. Would this harm my computer badly if done right? And would a laptop cooler help my Laptops speed?
I’m useing an Hp Pavilion dv6810us Entertainment Notebook Pc.

Yeah, no part of any Laptop should ever be overclocked. In fact, sometimes they should be underclocked to save power, extend life, run cooler and quieter. Laptop coolers are not very effective, and they do not affect speed, just temperature.

I suggest RivaTuner for overclocking, if you insist on it.

You can change the amount of memory used in the BIOS, the setup you get to after hitting “del” or “f2″ or some other key immediately after turning on the computer. Allocating more memory to the graphics card leaves less memory for your system.

i need help in choosing a computer?

ok i have a bit of a delema, christmas is coming soon and my mom told me she would buy me a eMac off of ebay ( i love macs and i asked) but here i am- i have a imac g3, compaq presario from like 1999 and a custom desctop pc thats slow and has major cosmetic isues (nasty white plastic turned yellow som cracks, not the best to be proud of) and so i need a lap top and a gaming machine and yes i MUST have a mac, but what to do?
bottom line:
-I am a media type person
burning dvd’s cd’s
watching movies
play games (sims 2, gta san andreas)
internet (bigtime! i am always on myspace, youtube, pplaylist, ect.)
school work (ms word. excel, etc.)
i also like to make websites

so now that you know me, i need help picking a workstation of computers. (i figure Core 2 Duo will be enough for my gaming and multi media)

will the eMac fit my multi media and tasking needs?
and what type of laptop should i get for my birthday? (nothing above 600 please)

The games you play don’t require a highend gaming laptop I would just pick out a simple multimedia laptop that has vista on it from Best Buy or other computer stores..
